Description

ANARDE is a team of lawyers, sociologists, researchers, scientists and environmentalists formed to serve as a think tank for policy dialogues and action on natural resource management. It has been operational since 2008 and has run over fifteen projects through use of the power of the law, policy dialogue, pro-bono court representation, legal, capacity building of justice law and order agencies, legal outreaches and legal empowerment related to integration of national and international human rights approaches within the framework of Sustainable Development Goals and UN Guidelines on Business and Human Rights. The core focus has been on vulnerable communities who are host to extractive resources such as minerals, oil and gas. In the same context we focus national players and decision makers through training and capacity building and push for policy reform. The key issues at the center of our work are gender equality in extractive resource use, compensation and resettlement, corporate accountability, protecting the environment amidst oil, gas and mining activities, reform of the law and policy to match new and emerging natural resource extraction and user challenges, ensuring that the poor and vulnerable access justice and remedy for their grievances. ANARDE runs three programs that is, the Legal Aid Program, Nature Conservation and Extractive Justice Programs. Under its legal aid program, it collects complaints from communities worst affected by natural resource use, undertakes policy research and advocacy, legal advisory to marginalized people and those affected by development projects, as well as strategic and public interest litigation. The organization undertakes capacity building of local communities and vulnerable populations to actualize their legal entitlements. We have also trained judicial officers (lower and upper bench) and practicing lawyers on with the framework of Business and Human Rights standards governing extractive activities especially in the Albertine Grabben and Karamoja Sub Region. The Extractive Justice Program serves to check the excesses of Mining and oil companies, capacity building of communities on rights, justice, participation, transparency and accountability in the sector. The nature Conservation program serves to monitor and identify environmental challenges to sensitive ecosystems, action against climate change and policy reforms. ANARDE is a company limited by guarantee and incorporated in Uganda. Reg No. 202063. ANARDE is as well registered as an NGO under the NGO Act, 2016. Reg No. INDR13954121NB. Permit No. INDP0001214NB.
