BAPSA emerged as a research organization in 1982 and carried out important research studies of national importance and influenced the policy makers at the national, private and Non-Government sectors. Gradually BAPSA started providing comprehensive reproductive health care services including MR/MRM/PAC and SRHR interventions for the disadvantaged urban and rural population. The main thematic areas that BAPSA works with are: i) Sensitization of the population and policy makers on the consequences of unsafe MR/abortion ii) Provisioning of Comprehensive Reproductive Health care services; ii) Advocacy on SRHR – at the policy level and at the community level, iii) Promotion of SRHR among the adolescents, youth and other population. The establishment of BAPSA was to reduce the high rate of maternal mortality caused by unwanted pregnancy and septic abortion coupled with inadequate reproductive health care services that has been clearly reflected in its vision & mission. BAPSA has been providing reproductive health services for nearly three decades and adolescent health services has been a vital component of its services. During the last few years BAPSA with the assistance of RFSU, EKN, IPPF and UNICEF implementing SRHR program including Youth/ Adolescent Friendly Services that gave BAPSA opportunity to produce a handful trained staff on SRHR. The community staffs are promoting SRHR knowledge to the community people. BAPSA has an excellent gender friendly environment within the organization and imparting knowledge on sexual & reproductive rights and gender equality in the community. For the promotion of SRHR education BAPSA’s publications and research are playing vital role among the policy makers and different stakeholders. BAPSA for improving the sexual and reproductive rights makes close collaboration with civil society members, media and different groups that work with sexual minority groups and also shares views with different groups and stakeholders for promoting the SRH in the society. Vision: The cardinal vision of BAPSA is to Safer society ensuring equitable quality sexual and reproductive health care. Mission: Creating enabling environment by:  Generating new knowledge related SRHR through research initiatives.  Ensuring easy access to affordable quality SRHR services  Developing skilled and gender sensitive professionals  Empowering community with SRHR knowledge.  Strengthening advocacy and networking mechanism Governance Structure of BAPSA: BAPSA is run by a 11 members Executive Committee headed by President, Mrs. Mahnur Rahman, Director (Rtd.) Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. The Executive Committee formulates policy guidelines and takes decisions on important matters from time to time. Implementation All programs undertaken by BAPSA are implemented and administered by the director, BAPSA who works under the guidance of the Executive Committee. The EC takes decisions on important issues and formulate policy guidelines from time to time. Accordingly the centers are managed by the guidance of the central office’s decisions and day to day operation is being carried out by the center’s managements. Legitimacy of the Organization: BAPSA is duly registered with the NGO Affair Bureau (Reg. # DSS/FDO/R-203 dt.23-01-86); Directorate of Family Planning (Reg. # DFP/MIS/83/90/220 dt. 10-04-94) and the Department of Social Welfare (Reg. # Dha- 08987, dated- 27-12-11.
