The Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education center (CATIE) is a regional center with strong international ties, dedicated to tropical food systems in synergy with nature. It operates based on comprehensive knowledge management through its three pillars: education, research, and outreach and in alliance with multiple partners and countries through a regional scientific platform with global influence. The transfer of technology and knowledge, as well as the impact on policies at different scales, are fundamental elements of its continuous contribution to poverty reduction and economic, social, and environmental development in the region. Mission: Achieve sustainable and inclusive human well-being in Latin America and the Caribbean, promoting education, research, and outreach for the sustainable management of agriculture and the conservation of natural resources. Governance and structure: CATIE has as its senior management bodies the Board of Directors and the Superior Council (made up of Ministers accredited by their member countries), as operating bodies. It has a General Directorate, a General Sub Directorate; and four technical and administrative divisions; the Directorate for Research for Green and Inclusive Development (DIDVI), the Directorate for Postgraduate and Training, the Directorate for Outreach and Global Partnerships and the Directorate for Finance and Corporate Services. -Research for Green and Inclusive Development (DIDVI) : The research conducted out by CATIE has a systemic approach. Its starting point is a holistic assessment of the problems and opportunities in rural areas. The Center implements its primary research and development actions through eight research units: 1) Resilient Livestock Systems, 2) Agroforestry and breeding of coffee and cocoa, 3) Agrobiodiversity and Food Security, 4) Forests and Biodiversity in Productive Landscapes, 5) Climate Action, 6) Resilient basins, water security, and soils, 7) Economy, Environment and Sustainable Agribusiness, 8) Inclusion and Gender, an 9) Bioestatistic. The implementation of the lines of research and the corresponding transfer of results is part of projects that contribute comprehensively to achieving sustainable and inclusive human well-being. -Postgraduate and Training : It is a technical and administrative division that is responsible for directing CATIE's actions in education at the graduate level and in training. It includes the Graduate School, Training Area, and the ORTON Library. The Graduate School offers academic Master and Doctorate degrees in agriculture and natural resources, as well as Graduate Diplomas and Specializations. The Training Area offers short and strategic courses, as well as technical diplomas in the different topics in which the Scientific Programs work, it has all the infrastructure for offer its to be face to face, virtual or blended learning. -Finance and Corporate Services: It is responsible for providing administrative and financial support to all Divisions, Units, and Projects. It has an Integrated Financial Information System and staff responsible for accounting, agreements, treasury, procurement, human resources, and general services. Furthermore, CATIE is supported by an Internal Audit Office that ensures transparency in the use of resources and the application of its administrative procedures. CATIE has annual turnover of USD 25 000 000. -Outreach and Global Partnerships : This directorate is responsible for coordinating the National Offices (NO) and liaisons in the countries, as well as with international organizations and donors. The NOs (Belice, Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama), liaisons (Bolivia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay and Peru) serve as a link between the headquarters in Costa Rica and the member countries. The NOs, under the leadership of a representative and its technical and administrative team, is a vital instrument for linking CATIE with the national, local, and international institutions and organizations that operate in each country. CATIE has conducted out various research and development projects throughout the Latin American region with funding from various organizations, including cooperation agencies from the United States of America, Canada, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Spain, the Netherlands, England, Switzerland, France, and Japan. We have also received financial support from various international financial agencies, such as the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the World Bank, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), the European Union, and KFW (Germany), with CGIAR research centers, as well as from international organizations such as the Interamerican Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), among others.
