Description
UK Export Finance (UKEF) is the operating name of the Export Credits Guarantee Department, the UK’s export credit agency. It helps UK exporters by providing insurance to them and guarantees to banks to share the risks involved in providing export finance. It also makes loans to overseas buyers of goods and services from the UK. If an overseas borrower defaults on a UKEF-guaranteed bank loan or if UKEF pays out on an insurance claim, it becomes the owner of the debt and will seek to make recoveries, taking account of UK government policy on debt forgiveness. In certain circumstances this debt is restructured or forgiven. Debt forgiveness which qualifies as Official Development Assistance (ODA) will be published on the IATI website.
