Description

The Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (Yayasan Lembaga Bantuan Hukum Indonesia/YLBHI), established in 1970, is a civil society organization that provides legal aid and assistance for those impacted by structural poverty and human rights abuses. As the national umbrella body of 17 regional legal aid offices (LBH) across 17 different provinces, YLBHI assists its locally established offices in case advocacy, policy advocacy, and community empowerment to guard the spirit of rule of law, democracy and human rights in Indonesia. The organization has a strong history in Indonesia, playing a key role in strengthening civil society, democracy, and human rights. During the Soeharto regime, YLBHI-LBH became one of the key actors in opposing and overthrowing the regime, acting as a node and locomotive for the pro-democracy movement in Indonesia. YLBHI consistently fights for democracy and human rights and has birthed civil society organizations that currently play an important role in protecting the human rights of marginalized peoples and communities.
